Mayors Gather in Bratislava for the 6th Pact of Free Cities Summit

On 12 May 2026, mayors and city leaders from across Europe and beyond will gather in Bratislava for the 6th Summit of the Pact of Free Cities, hosted by Bratislava Mayor Matúš Vallo.

Founded in 2019 by the mayors of Bratislava, Budapest, Prague and Warsaw, the Pact of Free Cities has grown into a global alliance of democratic city leaders committed to protecting freedom, democracy, rule of law, human dignity, inclusion, and social justice. Today, the Pact brings together nearly 40 cities from across Europe and around the world.

This year’s summit takes place at a time of increasing democratic backsliding, growing political polarization, and mounting pressure on local autonomy in many countries. Under the title “Democracy in danger. Will free cities stay safe? Which cards to play with in the changing world?”, participating mayors will discuss the role of cities as defenders of democratic values and open societies in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical environment.

The summit will further deepen the Pact’s transatlantic dimension. A group of American cities is expected to officially join the alliance during the summit, reflecting growing international interest in cooperation among democratic local leaders. The participation of U.S. mayors highlights the increasing importance of cities as frontline defenders of democratic norms, civil liberties, and inclusive governance.

The summit program includes closed-door discussions among mayors, thematic panels on democratic resilience and urban security, and a public event featuring city leaders from Europe and the United States. Topics will include defending local democracy, countering authoritarian narratives, emergency preparedness, protecting vulnerable communities, and strengthening cooperation between democratic cities globally.

“Cities are increasingly becoming the democratic anchors of our societies,” said Mayor Matúš Vallo ahead of the summit. “At a time when democratic values are challenged in many parts of the world, cooperation among cities is more important than ever.”

The Pact of Free Cities Summit in Bratislava aims to reinforce the alliance’s role as a global platform for democratic urban leadership and international solidarity among cities committed to freedom, openness, and democracy.
